This workshop focuses on the elusive and thrilling experience of shared timing in Contact Improvisation. Tidal time, Pulse-time, Rolling time. We will investigate how different qualities of touch invite bio-rhythms, leading to physical accuracy in movement and communication. We will also experiment with energetic structures in space; such as undercurrents, over-currents, vacuums, suspension, dynamic falling and flight.

Sarah Gottlieb is a dance artist whose work layers contemporary movement, somatic research, and improvisation. As an independent artist, and in collaboration with the other members of BodyCompass Dance Project, Sarah explores the body as a system of perception, communication, and re-patterning. Movement becomes a strategy for deepening personal process, and relating this to our inherently political surroundings. Motivated by queer-feminist inquiry, which embraces evolving concepts of identity, intersectional listening, and experimentation; Sarah sees performance as live testimony within a world defined by continuous movement.
Sarah Gottlieb (Chicago/Madrid) studied dance at Sarah Lawrence College, and then graduated from DePaul University in 2014 with a self-designed BA: Conscious Studies of the Body and Movement. Since 2010 Sarah worked closely with Nana Shineflug, and includes the principles of Shineflug’s The Conscious Body in her own movement pedagogy. Sarah is also a Certified Laban Movement Analyst, certified by Integrated Movement Studies. As a devoted practitioner of Contact Improvisation (CI), Sarah regularly facilitates jams, and has taught at festivals including WCCIJ and GLACIER. She was the artistic coordinator of GLACIER, the Midwest’s oldest regional CI retreat, in 2015/16. Sarah has taught CI as a guest artist at DePaul University, Purdue University, Columbia College, The University of Chicago, and La Universidad de Nebrija. Her choreography has been supported by The Judith Dawn Memorial Foundation, DCASE, 3Arts, and Links Hall; and has been performed in Chicago, California, Mexico and Madrid. She is currently living, teaching, and performing in Madrid, Spain. Her investigation of Timing in CI has been developed in collaboration with Catalina Mahecha.
