She teaches CI, yoga and pilates classes in Boulder and regularly travels to Europe and around the US to teach at festivals and workshops. Her long time practices of authentic movement, yoga and meditation are important influences on her dancing and teaching. Currently, she is a student in Body Mind Somanautics, a somatic psychology and living anatomy training program and a graduate of the comprehensive training in the Hakomi Method of Experiential Psychotherapy. She delights in exploring and discovering new depths to the form and is particularly interested int he intersection of physics and expression and the mind/body relationship.
Joanna Rotkin: After living in New York City for a number of years dancing, taking class, and performing with amazing artists from the downtown dance scene, Joanna moved back to her native state of Colorado to form TinHOUSE Experimental Dance Theatre in 2004. Since that time, Joanna has had the privilege of collaborating and creating numerous original works with dance artists Breanna Rogers, Nathan Montgomery, Delisa Myles, Jayne Lee, and currently Laura Ann Samuelson of Hoarded Stuff Productions. In May of 2010, Joanna was invited to be part of a month long site-specific dance project that traveled down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, resulting in the dance film DanceDownRiver. Joanna teaches contemporary dance, improvisation, and composition at Naropa University and the University of Colorado in the Libby Residential Academic Program. She also coordinates and teaches intergenerational dance programs at local schools and community centers. She holds an MFA in Contemporary Performance from Bennington College and a BFA in Dance and Improvisation from Prescott College.

Akiyama’s Contact Improvisation teachers include Alicia Grayson, Gretchen Spiro, and Steve Homsher as well as Nancy Stark Smith, Chris Aiken, Angie Hauser, Ray Chung, Jörg Hassmann, Scott Wells, Mirva Mäkinen, Benno Voorham, and Ronja Ver.
